Manhattan. 2058. Lieutenant Eve Dallas, the protagonist in this police procedural, is investigating a "conspiracy of slaughter" fostered by the creation of a new hallucinogenic drug, an illegal yet highly desired sexual stimulant holding a lethal promise of immortality AND providing the motivation for violent murder. With the skill of a full cast, Susan Ericksen adroitly portrays both sides of Eve--the focused, sharp, police interrogator and the soon-to-be-married romantic. She also captures Eve's multimillionaire Irish lover, the wedding-dress designer who is built like a bus, the willowy Pandora, the crusty Detective of Illegals, the single but perpetually hopeful Assistant Officer Peabody, and a publicity-hungry celebrity couple. Police Lieutenant Eve Dallas's wedding is a few weeks away, but instead of planning the nuptuals, she finds herself involved in the murder of a famous model, with her own best friend as the prime suspect. In a metropolis of the future, Eve is aided by sophisticated communication technology but still misses key clues because of her personal involvement. Cristine McMurdo-Wallis is a perfect narrator for this series, with voices that totally suit the characters' personalities, dialects that are authentic, and a straightforward style that conveys the suspense and excitement without melodrama. She also handles the steamy sex scenes with aplomb. This performance is an example of how, in the hands of a superb reader, what might be overwriting comes off as great read. S.S.R.
