New York Times-bestselling author Felix Francis returns with the newest thriller in the Dick Francis tradition. Jeff Hinkley is back for a third outing. Still a British Horseracing Authority investigator, Jeff has been seconded to the US Federal Anti-Corruption in Sports Agency (FACSA) where he has been asked to find a mole in their organization, an informant who is passing on confidential information to those under suspicion in American racing. Jeff attends the Kentucky Derby with the FACSA team, accompanying the Special Agents on a raid to a horse trainer's barn at Churchill Downs. Things do not go well and someone ends up dead. Then, on the morning of the Derby itself, three of the most favored horses in the field fall sick in what Jeff considers are suspicious circumstances. Jeff goes in search of answers, taking on the undercover role of a groom on the backstretch at Belmont Park racetrack in New York. But he discovers far more than he was bargaining for, finding himself as the meat in the sandwich between FACSA and corrupt individuals who will stop at nothing, including murder, to capture the most elusive prize in world sport, the Triple Crown.

Bestseller Francis’s less than inspired third horse-racing mystery featuring Jefferson Hinkley (after 2015’s Front Runner) takes Jeff, who works for the Integrity Service of the British Horseracing Authority, across the pond to assist a colleague in the U.S. Tony Andretti, the deputy director of the American Federal Anti-corruption in Sport Agency, suspects that one of his racing investigators has been tipping off the bad guys. Jeff is intrigued by the assignment, which coincides with the lead-up to the Triple Crown, and soon finds ample reason to support Tony’s fears after an undercover operation goes fatally awry. In an effort to flush out the culprit, Jeff goes undercover in the stables of George Raworth, the trainer of the Kentucky Derby winner, Fire Point, who may have benefited from the sudden illness that eliminated some of the competition. The high stakes and American setting compensate only in part for a familiar story line and a lead who’s less rounded than a typical hero of a similarly themed Dick Francis novel. Agent: Ed Wilson, Johnson & Alcock.

Martin Jarvis returns to narrate this whodunit, written by the son of the late Dick Francis. Jefferson Hinkley of the British Horseracing Authority takes on a special assignment in the U.S., endeavoring to uncover corruption in American thoroughbred racing circles. Jarvis's posh British voice is a good fit for the patrician horseracing set across the Pond, and he adds delightful characterizations for the more down-to-earth Brits hanging around the barns. But this story takes place in the U.S., and his American accents are not quite plausible. Perhaps Jarvis's slightly muddled U.S. characters are suitable for the author's underlying America-bashing theme. But the narration is crisp and well paced, allowing the listener to enjoy an interesting behind-the-scenes yarn about the high-stakes world of the Triple Crown.
